Biography

Beatrix Ong (born 1976) is a London-based British luxury fashion designer, known for her classic but whimsical women’s shoes. Her creations have graced many catwalks and stores all over the world.

Beatrix Ong launched her own label by the same name in 2002 and the debut collection, was featured in Vogue, Elle and Vanity Fair and continues to have a constant presence amongst international fashion press as well as television and film.

Beatrix Ong has collaborated many leading fashion names, designers and artists including Temperley London, Pringle of Scotland, Tristan Webber, Nathan Jenden (Creative Director of Diane von Furstenberg), Natasha Law (actor Jude Law’s sister), Dover Street Market and Nike to name a few.

Shoo Magazine hailed Beatrix Ong as “The New Choo” and she was named by the Independent newspaper as one of the 10 Leading Shoe Designers amongst Manolo Blahnik and Patrick Cox.

Born in London, England. After graduating from high school in Hong Kong and England, Beatrix studied at Central St. Martins College of Art & Design and the London College of Communication in London. Followed by a course at the Fashion Institute of Technology before returning to London to attend the renowned Cordwainers College in London. Following an internship at the Fashion Department of Harper’s Bazaar in New York, Ong secured a highly coveted design position at Jimmy Choo. Wanting to push the boundaries of beautiful shoemaking was always at the heart of Ong’s decision to go solo. Another reason was to take up the challenge of making shoes comfortable enough to wear during the day and special enough for them to carry on wearing in the evening. In September 2002, Beatrix Ong realised her dreams and launched her debut collection at the Metropolitan Hotel during London Fashion Week. This collection immediately caught the attention of international press and buyers alike, leading to over 30 prestigious stockists worldwide in its first season.

Often cited music to be one of the main influences for her collections, Beatrix Ong has a solid fan base amongst British music and rock royalty, plus some of Hollywood’s hottest stars such as Sienna Miller, Kate Moss, Jade Jagger and Dita von Teese. Beatrix Ong shoes or products are created by the most reputable manufacturers in Italy. Each product is hand finished by craftsmen that have learnt their trade through generations. Employing traditional shoe-making methods balanced with the latest innovations in the industry, each season’s designs are brought to life through the use of the finest materials painstakingly sourced from across the globe. In 2009, Beatrix Ong customised Nike iD Blazer Trainers become available for a limited period only on Harvey Nichol’s new 4th floor. After providing the Autumn/Winter 2010 show shoes for British heritage brand, Aquascutum, Beatrix Ong announces her commission from Aquascutum to design a collection of shoes for both men and women. The collection will be available from Spring Summer 2011.

“Balance is the perfect state of still water. Let that be our model. It remains quiet within and is not disturbed on the surface” – Confucius. The philosophy behind Beatrix Ong is firmly grounded in the continuous quest to maintain balance whether it is through design, company ethos or personal well-being. Each creation involves careful thought, delicate execution of skills and the result is something rather unique: innovative yet elegant, versatile yet classic, dainty yet incredibly wearable. As a fast growing British label, Beatrix Ong is an internationally recognized luxury brand appreciated by discerning women who understand true luxury. Beatrix Ong not only strives to create distinctive, unique and elegant designs, but also to ensure each product is thoughtfully crafted. This is a luxury brand that does not compromise on comfort. Each high heel shoe is carefully padded along the insole in a way that still ensures a sleek and elegant shape without bulk. Every last and heel is designed to be perfectly balanced, ensuring an even distribution of weight and therefore more stability for the wearer.

Stores

The first Beatrix Ong store was opened in London’s Primrose Hill in 2004 and in 2007, the flagship store moved to the oldest arcade in the world, Burlington Arcade, in Mayfair, London. In 2008, British Fashion Council Chairman, Harold Tillman and Chief Executive of Jaeger, Belinda Earl enter into partnership with Beatrix Ong; a move that sees the trio joining forces to build the brand into a global luxury accessories brand.

Beatrix Ong continues to lead the company’s business and creative initiatives as Chairman and Designer. She launches her 1st concept store in London’s stylish Newburgh Quarter in 2009. “My five-year plan is to make the brand into a successful enterprise and continue to provide a high level of service and product to our customers as well as a balanced and exciting place of work for our employees… interspersed with some nice planned holidays” say Ong.
